Netflix Chillin

The ideal Netflix playlist for Macbeth would need to include how someone achieves greatness even due to adversity, teaches him how to learn from his mistakes, and helps him grow as a person.  Today, there are many creations in tv or movies that would have been great exemplars for Macbeth to help him be better in many ways and be more successful.

1) Coach Carter

http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV5BMTIwMTc1MDQ1Nl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNDk3NzcyMQ@@._V1_SX640_SY720_.jpg
  • Coach Carter is a movie about a newly hired basketball team and his less then mature basketball team.  The members of the team grew up in a struggling area which has created bad habits which lead to bad grades and difficulty working together as a team.  The movie focuses on how Coach Carter changes the attitudes of all the team member in the classroom and on the court and how it changes the ability to win games and they compete for a state championship.  This would be a great example of perseverance for Macbeth.  Even though Coach Carter was faced with so much adversity he kept trying, he had players quitting and was even forced to lock the gym for weeks until his players received good enough grades.  Coach Carter was willing to do whatever necessary to stick to his morals and to also make his players into the best young men as possible.  Macbeth could have seen this as an example that he needed to do everything possible in his power to be succesful to keep his position as king and more importantly keep his life.
2) Best of Me

  • I think that Macbeth could have benefited greatly by a better relationship with his wife.  Due to the lack of their relationship there ability to be succesful as possible was affected.  Macbeth did not always listen to his wife and his wife did not always listen to him.  At first Macbeth was afraid to carry out their plan and Lady Macbeth didn't listen and that is what led to so many of their problems.  Later on Macbeth didn't listen to his wife after they had carried out their plan and she got skeptical and his lack of attention to her eventually led to both of them dying.  The Best of Me would have been revealing to Macbeth, and also his wife, the importance of loving someone completely with all of yourself.  The movie is about a couple that grew up as a couple together but then the boy goes to jail over a freak accident where his friend gets killed.  He decides that it is best to end the relationship.  The movie then picks up later on in life and they reunite and fall back in love.  Eventually the girl's current son gets hurt in the crash and her boyfriend from when she was younger also was hurt and was braindead and her son received a heart transplant from her old boyfriend.  I think that this would've shown Macbeth the importance of relying on your love to help you in all ways no matter what and that it is important to be there and to also listen to the other.
3) Forever Strong

  • Forever strong would play a similar importance to Coach Carter.  It would show him the importance of perseverance. the will, and the work it takes to be succesful.  The movie is about a spectacular rugby star that almost completely ruins his chance to play the game he loves.  He gets in trouble with the law and is forced to spend time in jail and loses time with the game he loves.  When first returning from prison he meets and new coach and is invited to play for another team.  This team functions completely different then what he is used to and it makes him almost want to quit.  But he learns from the new coach and the players during his time on the team. He learns how to be stronger mentally and learns to put up with the expectations and perseveres and eventually helps lead the team to a national title.  I think this would have helped show Macbeth that even though things might be rough like when his wife died that if he had persevered then he would have eventually overcome his struggles.

4) Marvel's Daredevil

  • I think that this series would have been a great series that reinforces the idea that Macbeth isn't the only person that does significantly wrong things for themselves.  This series is about a man that was once blind and his regaining of his sight.  With the acquirement of this sense then man is able to fight for what he believes in.  He believes his city is being ruined and he thinks that it is necessary for him to fight the evil in his city to make it better.  I think that this is similar to Macbeth's choice to kill to become king, he and his wife believed it was something he needed to do and to do so he had to kill.  Daredevil believes that it is his job to clean up the city and he is willing to do whatever he needs to clean it up.

Values of Manhood

How do the values of manhood differ in modern times? What do you think it takes to be a good man?
I think that becoming a man is a very important process that all boys travel through as they mature and learn what being a Man is.  To me, becoming a man is one of the most important parts of a boys life.  It is a journey that takes a lot of learning from mistakes, a lot of pain and suffering, and creates a lot of memories.  I think there are many aspects that are very important when being able to call yourself a good man.  Some of the few simple characteristic that a good man needs to posses is the ability to love, ability to support, kindness, strength(physically and mentally), and finally a good attitude.  I believe that these simple characteristics are necesary in creating a strong foundation for a boy to become a man and develop even more dynamic characteristic revealing of his man hood.  I believe that if a male has the ability to love most of these other characteristics will also be present, the ability to care for something so much that you are willing to do anything for that person no matter what.  You are able to support that person, be kind to that person with everything they do and to everyone they are associated with.  You are also able to help them with your strength physically by solving problems are completing projects to save money, but most importantly by strong for the metally, when their love is hurting emotionally they are the brick wall that holds their loved one up even though it might not be the most "manly" way to be according to today's society.  Many of these characteristics are not easy to come buy and learning by experiences is what helps a boy become a man and develop these characteristics.  Becoming a man is a very important process that I have just started to crack the can on, it is a process that is very important for me and I'm very excited to become my own man eventually.

I don't think that the values of manhood differ greatly in todays society from the society of Macbeth.  I think that the oppurutnities that are present to man in Macbeth are more regularyly available to males only in Macbeth's society than in today's society.  Due to this I think the differance in manhood from today to Macbeth's is the importance placed on having manhood or being a man.  A great example of this is through Macbeth's wife during the play, she wants to unsex herself so she will be able to have more power.  This is a prime example of how the importance of being a male provides more oppurtunities in Macbeth's society.  As to what it took to be a good man, I believe there was a little bit of difference, I think that men in that society did not require as much of an ability to love or be strong mentally for their wives.  I believe that these were two very differing aspects due to the difference in treatment of women from todays society to the time Macbeth was written, today women have much more freedom and power, which is still not as equal to man, but this more balanced equality of power amound each gender allows a man to change his characterisitcs and still be a man.  Women in Macbeth didn't have very much power so men did not have to truly love their wives and their wives would stay with them because of fear or because it would be wrong not to even if they were miserable and the it was not common for men to support their women emotionally during the time of Macbeth, that would be viewed is not manly during the time.

Art Analysis Post

Piece: Reliquary Casket with scenes from the Martyrdom of Saint Thomas Becket
Creator: Unknown, suspected to be English or German
Time Period: 1173-1180
Medium: Sculpture and Painting

This piece was created out of silver and niello, and includes a gemstone on the top of the casket.  Many believe that the piece was created somewhere in England.  The piece was created to hold a relic piece that belonged to Saint Thomas Becket.  Becket was an Archbishop of Canterbury, which is a place in England.  Becket was killed by the knights of the King of England due to a long disagreement between the two.  The piece contains pictures on the sides of the casket portraying images of the Saint’s murder and what was thought to have happened.  This piece is a very unique piece that required a great amount of skill that the author needed to create the piece.  It required steady handwork to create the vivid images that are included on the faces of the casket.  It also required great building skills to create the casket itself and make it so unique.  The images that the artist painted on the faces of the casket are in greyscale, which makes them seem very dark and dull.  I think that the artist did this for a reason, which was to so they negative aspect of how Becket was murdered and it is revealing of the artists feelings of Becket’s murder.  I think that this piece has a very important religious value to many people.  The Canterbury tales is a collection of writing by Geoffrey Chaucer that revolves around the pilgrimage to Becket’s site of death.  This was a religious role for people in that time and Becket was main of great religious power.  Becket was also murdered in the Cathedral of Canterbury, which also makes this piece have an even greater religious value as well.

Canterbury Tales and Jane Eyre

There is a reoccurring theme throughout the entirety of the chapter, this being the power that Mr. Brocklehurst has over Miss Temple, and the larger view of power that men had over women as a part of the setting of the novel.  Bronte uses this theme as a way to portray a belief that she believes need to be fixed in society.  This desire to present her belief allows Bronte to use many different stylistic features to create a setting that will enhance the audience’s reception of her belief to invoke a response.  Bronte’s target audience would be women around the world who are oppressed by men and men that are oppressing women.  This novel therefore has two differing purposes, which are dependent on the reader.

An example of a stylistic feature the Bronte utilizes in this chapter is, “"Your directions shall be attended to, sir," said Miss Temple.  "And, ma'am," he continued, "the laundress tells me some of the girls have two clean tuckers in the week: it is too much; the rules limit them to one." (Bronte Par 14-15).  The choice of using quotes to show a characters response allows for the reader to see an emotional aspect of each character, it enhances Bronte’s characterization.  This quote is revealing of the power that Mr. Brocklehurst had over Miss Temple and the fear that Miss Temple had of him due to her quick and professional response.

Michael the Guardian Angel

My name is Michael Thomas Moody.  My parents put a lot of thought in what they were going to name me, this is because they had to name two at the same time and their were certain aspects that they wanted to have present in both of our names.  My mother grew up in a very strong Catholic household and has passed on her faith to myself and the rest of my family.  My parents gave me the name Michael after an angel, the angel was regarded as the proctector of lives (http://www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=308.) , my parents found this very unique and a good aspect of the Catholic faith they wanted represented in my name.  I recieved my middle name from my grandfather, the choice by my parents to name me after him is very important to me and something I respect a lot.  My grandfather was a very prevalent person in my life that tought me many things and was also very influential in my life as a Catholic.  My last name is also a very unique aspect of my life,  it allows me to see where my heritage is through seeing where my relatives come from to see where our family once originated.  The choices of my parents have helped and will always help identify who I am.

I think that there is multiple areas in my life where I could be "two" completely different things.  I think one of the biggest areas that this is prevalent is participating in a tennis team, in high school, and hopefully in college.  Most people see tennis as an individual sport, which at the professional level is a very individual sport.  Playing on a team helps show the two different areas of tennis.  As an individual on a team it is your job to win your match, but as a member of the team it is your job to help your teammates and lift them up to help the team overall win as a match.  Both of these areas of a tennis team I have learned over my time of participating are both very influential in the ability to be a succesful team.  As I have become an upperclassmen on the high school team I have learned how it's the responsibility of us to help the underclassmen be succesful, and as a starter how it is important for me to win my match individually.  These two aspects I have also learned will be even more important on a college tennis team while on my visits with coaches and some college players.

Huie vs. Atwood

http://know.wingyounghuie.com/tagged/From_the_Archive
Wing Young Huie Fourth of July, Powderhorn ParkMinneapolis, MN
Lake Street USA (1997-200),  Taken around 2012

At first what we see is a photo that would seem very normal to most citizens of the United States, fireworks, which are an image we associate with the 4th of July.  Many of its viewers would not react with very strong emotions to this picture in a negative way.  This image would provide a lot of americans with joy and help bring a positive emotional reaction, sepcifically pride in their nation.  That was my first reaction to this picture, what beauty is present throughout our nation and how we are able to celebrate our great nation as a whole nation and how even if there are problems going on throughout the ation we are proud to be a part of it.

This picture can also be interperted in very many different ways from many people in the United States that might not be citizens of the United States, that could be immigrants.  Many people that aren't legal citizens of the nation could be feel very ostricized as a minority when regarding the holiday that is shown in this image.  The 4th of July is a very prevelent holiday celebrated throughout all cities of the nation and would be very hard to avoid due to the importance it plays to many of the people celebrating it.  As viewers if we were to think about how certain people could emotionally react to the holiday, let alone the picture, would make us think about how we might act around certain people not just on this day but all the time, or maybe the gravity we place on the holiday and how it could negatively impact their thoughts on our country or the citizens of this great country.

Both Atwood and Huie are very thoughtful in their ways of presentation.  They both attempt to leave interpertation to the viewer on how they might see certain groups or characters as different from what is societal standard in the present or in the setting of the piece of literature.  Even though both leave it to interpertation, they present their ideas in very different ways, Huie uses images(pictures) where as Atwood uses language.  Both of these styles are very affective in different ways.  Huie's use of pictures allows a greater range of interepertation from viewers due to the ability to focus on many different pieces of the image.  Atwood's use of language creates an ability for her to somewhat control what the reader interperts during certain parts of the story.  This contrast reveals the differences in the purpose of the two authors and their idea of what would be the most effective way to present their purpose to viewers and there want to have viewers take action to make a change with the topic.
